Train Hard. Recover Smarter. Summer Temps Can Be Tough.

Why hydration matters more than you think. Especially during a South Carolina Summer.

Hydration Is More Than Just Drinking Water

If you've spent even one summer in South Carolina, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The heat is one thing, but the humidity is something completely different. Your body is working overtime just to keep you cool — and when you add training on top of that, proper hydration becomes critical.

Here's the thing most people don't realize: by the time you feel thirsty, you're already mildly dehydrated. And even mild dehydration — as little as 1-2% of body weight — can significantly impact your performance, your recovery, and your mental clarity.

Electrolytes Matter as Much as Water

When you sweat, you don't just lose water — you lose electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride. These minerals regulate muscle function, nerve signaling, and fluid balance. Drinking plain water in large amounts without replacing electrolytes can actually dilute your sodium levels and make things worse.

During heavy training or extended outdoor time in the summer heat, consider adding an electrolyte supplement to your water, salting your food more liberally, and eating hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and citrus.

Practical Hydration Tips for Summer Training

  • Start hydrating the night before a hard training day
  • Drink 16–20oz of water first thing in the morning
  • Sip consistently throughout the day rather than chugging large amounts at once
  • Add electrolytes during and after workouts lasting over an hour
  • Monitor urine color — pale yellow is the goal

Train hard. Recover smarter. And drink your water. Your performance — and your next-day soreness — will thank you.
