How Heavy Should I Be Lifting?

Why Weightlifting Percentages Matter (And Why Going Heavy Every Week Isn't the Answer)

If you've ever followed a structured strength program, you've probably seen something like: 5x5 @ 75%, 3x3 @ 85%, 4x8 @ 70%. For some people, that makes perfect sense. For others, it raises a question: I want to be strong — so why not just lift as heavy as possible every time?

It's a fair question. And the answer has to do with how the body actually adapts to training.

Why You Can't Max Out Every Session

Your body adapts to stress — but it needs time to recover from it. Lifting at maximal or near-maximal intensity every session doesn't give your nervous system, muscles, and connective tissue time to recover and grow stronger. Over time, this leads to stalled progress, increased injury risk, and burnout.

What Percentages Tell You

Training percentages are based on your one-rep max (1RM). Working at different percentages develops different qualities: lower percentages (60–70%) build muscular endurance, moderate percentages (70–80%) build hypertrophy and strength, and higher percentages (85%+) develop maximal strength and neural efficiency. A good program uses all of these zones strategically — that's what periodization is.

How Heavy Should You Lift Today?

The answer depends on the goal of today's session, where you are in your training cycle, how you're feeling, and what your coach prescribes based on your history and goals.

At Redemption Fitness, our coaches take the guesswork out of this. You'll always know what to lift, why, and how. Come train with a plan.
