Never Compare Yourself to Your Younger Self

Jennifer Hunter • August 8, 2026

Recently I was talking with a friend in the health and fitness industry about life, the gym, and how training changes as we get older. As we discussed the differences between people who train and those who do not, we also acknowledged how many people who have trained for years tend to give themselves a hard time as they age — and sometimes quit altogether because they can no longer perform the way they used to.

This is one of the most self-defeating traps in fitness. And I want to address it directly.

You Are Not Competing With Your Past Self

The 25-year-old version of you had different hormones, different recovery capacity, different stress levels, and different life demands. Comparing your current performance to that version isn't fair — it's not even a fair comparison. Your goal isn't to be who you were. Your goal is to be the best version of who you are now.

What Changes (And What Doesn't)

Yes, some things change with age. Recovery takes longer. Maximal strength may decrease. Injury risk requires more management. But the capacity to improve, to feel better, to move well, to have energy, to be strong relative to your peers — none of that goes away. People in their 60s and 70s who train consistently can outperform sedentary people half their age. That's not motivational fluff. That's physiology.

Train for Who You Are Now

The goal at 50 is different from the goal at 25 — and that's not a problem, it's an evolution. Focus on what you can do. Celebrate what you can still do. Build toward what you want to be able to do. That's a worthy goal at any age.

At Redemption Fitness, we meet you where you are — not where you used to be. Come train with us.
